Dismal Second Half Sinks Langney

Dismal Second Half Sinks Langney

By Steve Roberts

Langney Wanderers 1-3 Lingfield

Match Report by Steve Roberts

We welcomed an inform Lingfield team back to Priory Lane in our final fixture of 2018.

The match got of to a positive start for Langney with us being very more positive than the visitors. Trevor McCreadie & Billy Crittenden both had good chances for us to take an early lead.

That lead would eventually come in 19th minute. Good work from Max Hollobone put Evan Archibald through whose initial shot was well saved. Trevor McCreadie then missed the initial rebound but managed to get a second chance and backheeled it past the Lingfield stopper.

Lingfield were forced to make a substitution after a short injury delay. Wanderers continued to be the better team but Lingfield were starting to get in to it and create some chances of their own.

Another injury delay this time to Wayne Wilkinson meant another prolonged stoppage. After this disruption Lingfield then started to dominate the game particularly in middle of the park.

Despite the late rally Lingfield hadn't really threatened Dan Hutchins goal, until the very influential Sammy Clements picked up a lose Langney ball in added time and pinged one into the top corner beyond a despairing Dan Hutchins.

Things would completely unravel for Wanderers when 2 minutes later a good ball into the box from Conor Wilford wasn't dealt with and Jamie Bakhit got a flick on and into the net.

Inexplicably Langney went into half time 2-1 down after a solid 45 minutes from Wanderers.

Half-time 1-2

Langney kicked off the second half and almost gave away a 3rd straight away. Lingfield then really started to dominate possession with Langney being guilty of giving the ball away far to easily.

Ben Connolly's movement and pace was causing problems for our centre backs, Hassan James was running Tariq Straker around, while Sammy Clements was pulling the strings in central midfield.

Lingfields 3rd came when a cross came into the box and was headed back goalwards by Wayne Wilkinson. Unfortunately Wayne showing his striker's ability put it just past Dan Hutchins and it landed in the bottom corner. This pretty much summed up our 2nd half performance.

Lingfield continued to play some lovely football and open us up while we opted for punts up the field. Though we created some good chances near the end as the game became stretched it was all a little after the horse had bolted.

Full-time 1-3

Overall Lingfield were good value for the win, but our second half performance was simply not good enough. It lacked shape, desire, intent and calmness in possession, all things we showed in the first half.

Next up is the short trip over to Newhaven against a team who know how to get a result when not playing well.
