More Woe For Wanderers
Langney Wanderers 1-3 AFC Uckfield
Match Report By Steve Roberts
On a bitterly cold winters day, we welcomed the inform Uckers too town. Kenny McCreadie started the same 11 they got the win last week at Peacehaven and we welcomed 2 new signings on the bench in Tre & Gianni Davey.
Langney couldn't have got off to a worse start when in the first minute we gave away a corner, the resultant corner ball came into the edge of the box where Steve Hickman sent a looping header goalwards which dropped in under the bar evading Tariq Straker on the post. A very poor goal from a defensive point of view as Langney looked to be caught napping.
This did at least push Langney onto the front foot where we created some excellent half chances, again like previous games we couldn't get a shot away to test Louis Rogers in the Uckfield goal. Uckfield started to see out the early Wanderers pressure and got in the game, while Langney started to lose its composure and force the ball which led to far too many balls being given away cheaply.
As the half drew to a close it was Uckfield looking the more likely to score, they duly did when a long kick up the field wasn't dealt with and Bailo Camara snuck in between Dan Hutchins and Peter Featherstone after the latters headed back pass was too short.
Two shocking goals to concede from a defensive point of view in what was a fairly even half apart from the score.
Half Time 0-2
Langney came out the second half with a mountain to climb, that mountain got higher in the 54th minute when Dee Okojie was able to beat a static Langney defence all too easily, he then spotted Dan Hutchins just off his line and he put in an exquisite chip shot that Dan Hutchins just couldn't get enough on to tip over. It was excellent work from Okojie to score and he caused us problems all game but he was also helped by some woeful team defending to score his goal.
McCreadie then made a double change and brought on the pacey pair of Gary Ingram & Tyler Capon, almost immediately it would cause problems with some more positive & direct running in behind. Tyler Capon was sent through and Taylor Maddock had little option but to bring him down and get his second yellow of the match.
Langney started to look the more dominant now against 10 men, Joe Summerbell forced Louis Rogers into his first meaningful save of the match after some good solo work. Uckfield still looked very dangerous on the counter as Wanderers pressed.
Tyler Capon would get his reward for a lively performance on 79 minutes, after more good work from Joe Summerbell he slotted calmly into the bottom corner beyond a helpless Louis Rogers. Langney huffed and puffed to try and get back into it with a second but to no avail.
They could have gone further behind if it wasn't for some good keeping from Dan Hutchins as we continued to make defensive errors as the game drew to it's an inevitable conclusion.
Full Time 1-3
You simply cannot gift a good team like Uckfield a two-goal start and expect to get a result. Uckfield always looked much more comfortable defensively and Langney were guilty of either overplaying or losing the ball when in good attacking positions. Max Hollobone was excellent at right back and kept the dangerous Ba Camara quiet most of the game, but we also seemed much more positive when he switched to midfield driving at defenders and bringing other players into the game.
Two shots on target from open play is not good enough for 90 minutes at this level, we have still got plenty to work on at both ends of the pitch if we are to escape the drop.
Uckfield were worthy winners on the day and punished us when they had the chance, you can see why they are having a good season they are organised, disciplined, hardworking and composed. In fairness, they didn't need to get into top gear against a team guilty of making too many errors.
No league game for us next Saturday, but we have a friendly against an Eastbourne Borough XI on Tuesday the 5th of February at Priory Lane 19:45 KO.
