Derby Day Drama

Langney Wanderers 2-2 Eastbourne Town

A brave but hardy 245 came to watch this local derby on what was a wet and wild night weather wise. The fans were not disappointed either in what was a pulsating match despite the atrocious conditions.

The match got off to a quick start with both teams creating early chances and with some hefty challenges flying. Evan Archibald was the first player in the book for a late challenge on goalkeeper Jason Tibble. Town's Tom Vickers perhaps should have followed him in the book as well for coming through the back of Trevor McCreadie a few minutes later.

The first goal came in the 16th minute when Chris Winterton set Wanderers away on the counter following some good work from Town's Aaron Capon. Gary Ingram received the ball on the wing after some good link up play between Trevor McCreadie & Evan Archibald, Ingram then got his head up and picked out Billy Crittenden on the edge of the box who rifled a beautiful volley into the top corner.

The game then started to emerge into a pattern of Town having the majority of possession and Langney looking to break, on 25 minutes following a clearance up field Tom Vickers miss controlled and the ball fell nicely to Trevor McCreadie who was then brought down cynically by Vickers when clean through, Vickers got a yellow card for his trouble when perhaps he should have already been in the book.

The last 10 minutes of the half was very much Towns, with Langney unable to retain possession the ball kept coming back but Town struggled to break through a disciplined Wanderers defence. The equaliser eventually came as we headed into 1st half injury time, a cross came in that could have been left to go out harmlessly but instaed it was headed clear by Tariq Straker after not getting a shout, the resultant clearance fell to a Town player who put through a lovely ball to Zac Attwood who finished neatly into the bottom corner.

Half-Time 1-1

The second half kicked off with Town looking to pile on the pressure again and Langney just about kept them out through a mixture of good defending and poor finishing. After seeing out the initial 10 minute Town burst the game settled down into Town huffing & puffing with out really troubling and Wanderers once more looking to catch them on the counter.

Wanderers then went 2-1 up on the 70th after another counter attack, the industrious Gary Ingram found himself on the byline without much on, he crossed or shot (only he'll no) across the goal and it somehow eluded the keeper and found the bottom corner, much to astonishment of nearly everyone in the stadium who'd assumed it had gone behind given the tight angle.

Town looked shell shocked but never gave up, John Lambert made some positive changes as they chased another equaliser and it looked like Wanderers had managed to repel everything that could be thrown at them until the last minute of added time. Dan Bolwell drove forward from midfield and with time running out unleashed a shot from 30 yards which again ended up in the top corner leaving Chris Winterton helpless.

Full-Time 2-2

On reflection it was probably a fair score line over the 90, but considering the weather the match was a great derby game with 2 goals that would've graced any pitch in the land. Disappointing from a Langney point of view to lose another lead so late on, this seems to be a problematic issue for Langney throughout the season so far. Yet I think we would have taken a point before the game against a very good Town team, though you can't but help thinking it was 2 points dropped given how late the equaliser was.

We go again on Boxing Day as we travel to the Oval to take on Little Common, this will be a huge game for both teams given there proximity in the table currently. This is then followed by a visit from Lingfield to Priory Lane on the 29th December.
