Langney Pay The Price
Crawley Down Gatwick 3-0 Langney Wanderers
Match Report by Steve Roberts
Langney travelled to Crawley Down looking to build on last weeks victory, but sadly a poor second half performance put pay to that.
The first half was a very even affair with neither team getting the upper hand. Defences were on top throughout and the slick surface proved problematic for both teams to get the weight of pass correct. The best chance of the half fell to the Wanderers just before half time. Wayne Wilkinson was put through by new signing Matthew Fear and with the goal beckoning and having stole a yard on the CDG defence he smashed his right footed shot well wide.
In added time of the first half Crawley Down had there best opportunity when Sam Cane headed goalwards to force a smart save from Dan Hutchins, they then followed up the resulting corner with another chance that was sent wide.
The second half kicked off with Crawley Down looking the brighter and more purposeful, it wasn't long before they punished Langney after some good attacking work had resulted in a corner. A beautiful delivery in caused problems for a static defensive unit and someone didn't pick up the incoming Michael Woods who bundled the ball over the line.
The half continued with Crawley Down controlling the game and looking the more dangerous. Wanderers were also guilty of some lazy looking passes and sloppy touches when not under pressure. The second goal came in the 78th minute, again from another corner when an unchallenged Sam Cane headed in.
Langney kept pushing to get back in the game but the well drilled Down defence was rarely threatened, probably the best chance for Langney was from a Billy Pout free kick that forced a good save from Andrew Greaves. While pushing to get back in the game we were also becoming more out of shape with every minute and suspect to the counter.
The third goal came in injury time after poor back pass led to Oliver Leslie picking up the ball and finishing smartly beyond Dan Hutchins. To be fair the score line could have been much worse if it wasn't for the excellent Dan Hutchins making several saves and combined with some poor decision making from Crawley Down players.
Full Time 3-0
Tale of two halves from Langney really, a solid first in which kept are shape well and frustrated Crawley Down. A dismal second when didn't come out with same intensity as we'd played the first combined with some poor marking, lack of shape and poor decision making. A very worthy win in the end for Crawley Down after an excellent second half performance from them, showing why they are at the top end with a very well drilled team performance for 90 minutes.
