Injury Time Defeat for Langney
By Steve Roberts
AFC Uckfield Town 4-3 Langney Wanderers
Match report by Steve Roberts
Langney made the short trip to Afc Uckfield Town for the traditional Bank Holiday Monday early kick off. Still searching for the 1st win of the season, we went in confident we could get a result as performances have been generally good but not consistent over the 90 minutes and individual errors have been punished clinically.
The game got of to a fast start with end to end play, though both sides were guilty of giving possession away to cheaply.
Wanderers took the lead on 10 minutes when Paul Rogers received the ball from a free kick and squared it into the box for Wayne Wilkinson who ghosted in to slot home unmarked to make it 1-0.
The lead didn't last long and 20 minutes Callum Smith smashed home to equalise. Both teams continued to press particularly in the wide areas with both teams having lots of joy on the wings.
On 40 minutes Callum Smith once again pounced and finished with a plomb to give The Oakmen the lead going into half time.
Afc Uckfield Town 2-1 Langney Wanderers
The teams came out for the second half and it wasn't long before Smith profited again from Langney conceding possession far to easily to complete his hat-trick. The game looked all but over now but Langney seemed to wake up at last and get more control of the ball. On 65 minutes a great move saw Paul Rogers again provide the perfect pass for Dan Bateman to finish neatly in the bottom corner.
The turnaround was complete 3 minutes later when a Wanderers throw in was delivered in by Matt Simpson for Paul Rogers. His sublime chest control and turn beat 2 defenders. He then calmly slotted it past the adavancing Louis Rogers to make it 3-3.
Wanderers dominated the 2nd half play and they continued to create openings going forward but just couldn't get that clear chance.
On 85 minutes Uckfield substitute Shaun Loft clattered into Dan Hutchins with a leading arm, the foul was given but no cards issued much to the dismay of Andy Goodchild. Plenty in the stands also thought he was very lucky to stay on the field.
As the game was deep into added time the Wanderers once again failed to clear there lines properly and conceded a sucker punch strike from that man Callum Smith again to get his 4th of the game. Wanderers marched up the pitch one more time but we're unable find the finish needed and the ref blew for full-time.
Afc Uckfield Town 4-3 Langney Wanderers
An exciting game for the neutral but gutting from a Langney stance to concede so late on having battled back to get on level terms and dominating most of the second half. C'est la vie !
Next up for the Wanderers is the first of 3 home games. We welcome Canterbury City to Priory Lane on Saturday the 1st September in the The Buildbase FA Vase. This should be another cracking game so we look forward to seeing you down the Lane then.
