Pulsating Game Finishes All Square

Langney Wanderers 2-2 Saltdean United

Today saw a new chapter begin in Langney’s short but eventful history. Our first match in the SCFL Premier Division saw the visit of Saltdean to Priory Lane. A side promoted the season before last they finished a credible 9th last time round. However this season the expectation will no doubt be higher and they are widely tipped as a top 5 side having restructured a whole new team preseason. Conversely Goodchild has retained the core of his players that attained promotion and strengthened in key positions.

The early exchanges were in the visitors favour with the home side struggling to retain possession and string any meaningful passes together. The deadlock was broken by the Tigers on 12 minutes, a long ball over the top which should have been routinely dispatched with but the hosts were found too square and Jamie Brotherton beat the onrushing Dan Hutchins. Whilst going 0-1 down it did wake the Wanderers and they became far more purposeful with their play. The equaliser came on 37 mins when a dubious foul on Paul Weatherby was taken quickly by skipper Paul Rogers from 40 yds out on the right, lobbing the keeper who was off his line. 10 mins later in time added a great solo run down the middle by MOTM Max Hollobone saw him skip a number of challenges only to play in Wayne Wilkinson who coolly slotted home across the keeper. HT 2-1.

It wasn’t long into the second period that after a Langney attack found the right back position was not covered from the turnover which Saltdean exploited and it resulted in a corner. There was a clearance off the line from the corner by Matt Simpson but the hosts failed to clear their lines properly and Josh Marshall fired home superbly from the second phase to draw the tie. The game then opened up with both sides looking to secure the points. A great spectacle I would imagine for the neutral with basketball style play. The visitors had another opportunity cleared off the line by Peter Featherstone. Conversely some good work from Wilkinson saw him skim one off the bar from a tight angle with the keeper beaten. There was a moment of controversy from a foul on Gary Ingram that resulted in a Tom Emery being given his marching order in the dying minutes. But it wasn’t over yet with a bullet header from Gary Ingram saved at point blank range by Saltdean stopper Nathan Stroomberg to deny the Wanderers a late winner. FT 2-2.

An entertaining game played in good spirit with a draw probably being a fair result overall but I am sure both sides will be regretting mistakes and missed chances. Certainly it proven the the squad can compete in this division and they did not look out of place against a team that will no doubt be up there at the finish.

Our attention now turns to the first of 6 local derbies, this Tuesday, when the Wanderers make the short trip across town to the Saffron’s to play Eastbourne Town. It’s a shame that Eastbourne Borough play at home the same night as Eastbourne Town Vs Langney Wanderers will no doubt be a good sized crowd.
