Langney Win Secures Second Spot

Langney Wanderers 3-2 Little Common FC
After a long and gruelling season, today saw the final game at home to league leaders Little Common. The game comes on the back of a poor performance against Hailsham on Tuesday. Previous encounters with Little Common this season have seen the commoners come out victors most recently in the 4-0 cup semi-final. The Wanderers needed a point to confirm their runners-up position putting the points tally beyond Lingfield.
Dommy Clark and Simon Catt returned to the side that drew with Hailsham midweek and Liam Baitup and Dan Bateman were notable absentees. The gaffer went with a more conservative system than the usual 4-4-2 preferring to play 4-5-1.
The early exchanges saw better passing from Little Common as the home side took time to settle on the ball. Little Common were happy to hit a few long balls which had worked well for them in the recent cup game, but the Langney back line and Ryan Alexander who was absent in that game won every aerial ball. As the half wore on the home side started to grow into the game and man of the match Wayne Wilkinson opened his account with a great goal from a Gary Ingram assist on the left on 34 mins. It wasn’t long before that man Wilkinson popped up again with a rare bullet header for his second on 41 mins. Disaster struck on the stroke of half-time when the away side scored direct from a corner that went through the Langney keepers hands. HT 2-1.
The early play in the second half was in Langney’s favour and the hosts managed to extend their lead on 58 mins with another good ball from the left that Wilkinson rifled home for his hatrick on the far post. Common then woke up and started to apply pressure against a well organised and disciplined Langney defence. On 75 mins the ball ping-ponged around the area with no-one able to get distance on the clearance the ball eventually falling for Wes Tate to blast in the Langney net. Last 15 saw common enjoy the possession as they huffed and puffed to break down a resilient Wanderers side, but to no avail. FT 3-2.
A deserved win to finish the season against a strong Little Common side who deserve to win the league. The 3 points sees Langney go level on points but common have +6 goal difference and a game in hand against Billingshurst next week. Wayne Wilkinson was in inspired form and has gone top of the goal scoring league with 35 (with 5 in various cups taking the tally to 40 for the season in total). A great way to sign-off on a fantastic season and confirm runners up promotion.
