More Cup Woe For The Wanderers
By Steve Roberts
AFC Varndeanians 2-0 Langney Wanderers
Langney crashed out of the Sussex Senior Cup to high flying division 1 outfit AFC Varndeanians.
It was another lackluster cup performance from Andy Goodchild's men which has been a regular feature of all the cup games this season, Varndean came out of the blocks faster and with more intent while Langney looked lethargic and hurried.
The first chance of the game fell to Varndeanians when Peter Featherstone got caught on the ball, luckily the shot from Oliver Stevenson was wide of the post. This was the first warning for Langney, but it went unheeded and it wasn't long before Varndeanians took the lead.
On 26 minutes another sloppy Langney pass this time from Gary Ingram gifted the ball back to Varndeanians who broke with numbers and but for a last ditch tackle from Adam Davidson that saved Wanderers blushes for now. Davidson went off for treatment while Varndeanians took a well planned corner, Joe Keehan got a yard on his marker Luke Denton to smash the ball into the net.
You'd have hoped this would have stirred Langney into action, but sadly not and Varndean continued to press and looked more likely to extend there lead with Dan Hutchins having to make a couple of smart saves. It wasn't until the final 5 minutes of the half that Langney started to exert any sort of pressure but alas not enough to even warm the keepers gloves. The half time whistle couldn't come soon enough for Wanderers in what was an insipid first half performance.
Half -Time 1-0
Straight from the resumption of play Langney once again got caught in possession in their own half, this time Tyler Capon was the gulity culprit, a good cross and knock down led to a Varndean shot that went harmlessly wide. Another early warning that was once again of our own making.
Varndeanians continued to press for the second and very nearly got it when the Wanderers back line switched off, a handball claim that didn't come led to the dangerous Matt Waterman pulling the ball back for an onrushing defender and attacker to contrive between them to hit the ball onto the post rather than the net.
We finally seemed to get a bit more of the ball but the well a organised Varndeanian defence was proving difficult to crack, Max Hollobone finally had our first chance but blazed high and over the bar. Soon followed by a Luke Denton shot that went harmlessly wide.
Varndeanians got there deserved reward when the ball went from the edge of there own box to our net in 4 passes, Matt Waterman doing the damage with an excellent finish under Dan Hutchins. An excellent team goal from there perspective but no doubt a shocker from ours.
Varndean continued to attack for a third, sometimes with good build up play but all too often gifted with unforced errors and poor decision making from our point of view. Better finishing would have seen a bigger scoreline that would have been more than deserved.
Finally we got a shot on target when Wayne Wilkinson found himself free on a corner only for the ball to be cleared off the line by the man on the post.
The game then began to fizzle out with Langney well beaten.
A very poor performance on our part for the whole 90 minutes but an excellent one from AFC Varndeanians. It was easy to see why they are top of the league with some excellent passing football on display, a team performance with energy, passion and pride. Everything we seemed too lack tonight. Well done to them and good luck in the next round.
Meanwhile Wanderers will need to regroup quickly with a difficult trip to Pagham on Saturday.
